Medium-term observations of salt marsh morphodynamics

چکیده

Salt marshes play a key role in attenuating wave energy and promoting sedimentation necessary to potentially adapt sea level rise. The changes the soil surface elevation, as result of spatially temporally varied pattern, affect hydrodynamics, marsh edge extension so rate. Little attention has yet been paid medium-term sedim\entation under influence extension. To fill this gap, we performed 6-year (from 2012 2018) field observation obtain elevation cross-shore tidal flats center Jiangsu Coast (China). salt is extracted from remote sensing images using NVDI technique, which allows us quantify seaward marshes. Results highlight that region varies function topography, inundation frequency distance edge. rate reduces linearly shoreward increasing region. At transition bare flats, follows parabolic relationship with increase but decreases at more landward sites. maximum initially located around mean high-water moves towards elevation. Our observations reveal these dynamics provide unique dataset for development, testing validation numerical simulations enhance predictions overall evolution flats.

Salt Marsh Tidal Channels

Salt marsh tidal channels are highly sinuous. For this project, field surveys and aerial photographs were used to characterize the planform of tidal channels at China Camp Marsh in the San Francisco Bay, California. To model the planform evolution, we assume that the topographic curvature of the channel centreline is a key element driving meander migration. Extraction of curvature data from a p...

Short-term mudflat dynamics drive long-term cyclic salt marsh dynamics

Our study aims to enhance process understanding of the long-term (decadal and longer) cyclic marsh dynamics by identifying the mechanisms that translate large-scale physical forcing in the system into vegetation change, in particular (i) the initiation of lateral erosion on an expanding marsh, and (ii) the control of seedling establishment in front of an eroding marsh-cliff. Short-term sediment...

Field observations of the persistence of Comp B explosives residues in a salt marsh impact area.

Field observations of weathering Comp B (RDX/TNT 60/40) residue were made on a live-fire training range over four years. The Comp B residue was formed by low-order detonations of 120-mm mortar projectiles. Physical changes were the disaggregation of initially solid chunks into masses of smaller diameter pieces and formation of red phototransformation products that washed off with rain or tidal ...

Long-term impacts of disturbance on nitrogen-cycling bacteria in a New England salt marsh

Recent studies on the impacts of disturbance on microbial communities indicate communities show differential responses to disturbance, yet our understanding of how different microbial communities may respond to and recover from disturbance is still rudimentary. We investigated impacts of tidal restriction followed by tidal restoration on abundance and diversity of denitrifying bacteria, ammonia...

Analyzing the Long-Term Phenological Trends of Salt Marsh Ecosystem across Coastal LOUISIANA

In this study, we examined the phenology of the salt marsh ecosystem across coastal Louisiana (LA) for a 16-year time period (2000–2015) using NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer’s (MODIS) eight-day average surface reflectance images (500 m). We compared the performances of least squares fitted asymmetric Gaussian (AG) and double logistic (DL) smoothing functions in terms of in...
